Ivatan Culture and Heritage

Maritime Culture & Traditional Practices

Historically, the Ivatans were adept seafarers and boat-builders. They constructed sturdy, rowed vessels suited for the rough seas surrounding Batanes. The tataya is a traditional small fishing boat, with or without outriggers, used by the Ivatan people. These boats are generally round-hulled and powered by rowers or sails made from woven pandanus leaves.

Traditional practices like the Kapayvanuvanuwa fishing ritual exemplify their deep connection to the sea and are part of ongoing efforts to preserve their maritime heritage.
